Renske (43), Crohn's disease

My life was about anticipating and controlling

Crohn's disease

I have lived with Crohn's since I was nineteen. For years that meant constantly working around my gut. Always wondering where the nearest toilet was. Spare clothes packed. Diarrhoea every single day. My life was about anticipating and staying in control.

That held up reasonably well for a while, until a rough patch threw my body completely out of balance. The symptoms got heavier and more intense. Medication seemed to help for a bit, but the moment I stopped, it all came roaring back. Other drugs just brought new problems. I noticed I was becoming afraid of medication, and above all of where this would end if it carried on.

I felt exhausted and desperate. This surely could not be the life I was meant to just accept.

After years of searching and trying, I finally found an approach that looked past the symptoms. Not just damping things down, but understanding what was actually going on in my body. That gave me hope. For the first time, it felt like someone was really looking at me as a whole person.

The change that followed was major. My diet was turned completely upside down. Things I had always taken for granted suddenly vanished. It was tough and took a lot of adjusting. It meant shopping differently, cooking differently and, at times, saying no to temptation.

What took me by surprise was how fast my body responded. Within a short time I felt the difference. My gut calmed down and my energy slowly returned. My confidence grew.

Of course there were ups and downs. Sometimes I could tell straight away that something did not agree with me. But even that helped, because it made things clear. I understood my body better and better.

Today I feel steadier than I have in years. I dare to make plans again without my gut running the show. I have picked up things I had long since given up on.

I am so glad I took this step. I have not doubted it for a second. It gave me back something I had been missing for a very long time: my life.
