Sandra (34), Ulcerative colitis

From fear and exhaustion to trust in my body

Ulcerative colitis

For ten years, my whole life revolved around being ill and taking medication. At first it seemed to help, but the next flare-up always came. Stronger and stronger drugs, less and less to show for it.

My body was worn out, and so was my mind. Some weeks I spent days in bed with migraines. I could not be there for my children the way I wanted to be, and I felt guilty towards my partner. My world kept shrinking, and my confidence slowly drained away.

Eventually I ran out of options. The inflammation stayed, whatever medication I tried. The thought of a stoma edging closer terrified me.

So I decided to stop taking everything. What followed was sheer panic. I was on the toilet dozens of times a day and barely dared to leave the house. Even nipping out for groceries felt like a gamble.

But deep down I knew this could not be the end of it. I was sure food and lifestyle had to play a part. The moment I got proper guidance with that, everything changed.

I was taken seriously. My questions got answered. Instead of fear, I got explanations. Within a short time I already noticed the difference. My body started working with me instead of against me.

I no longer had to plan my days around toilets. The panic lifted. The trust came back.

It takes adjustment and discipline, but it has given me back something I thought I had lost for good: my life. And I want that for anyone standing where I once stood.
