Dirk (54), Crohn's disease

I felt sicker from the medication than from the disease

Crohn's disease

I lived with Crohn's for years. Medication kept the symptoms in check, until the point came where the side effects weighed heavier than the disease itself. My body was worn down and I felt less and less like myself.

There was talk of even stronger drugs, and of surgery if the medication stopped working. That was the moment I knew: I do not want to carry on like this.

I decided to do things differently. Not because it was easy, but because I could not see any other way. I wanted to understand what was happening inside my body, and why it kept losing its balance.

Thorough testing showed my symptoms were not only about my gut, but about food as well. That meant change. My whole diet had to be reworked, and my body needed time to recover. It did not happen fast, and it took patience.

The process was a long one. But that made sense to me. My body had taken years to fall out of balance, so healing was always going to take time too. Bit by bit, I started to notice the difference. The symptoms eased and my energy came back.

Along the way I got to know my body again. What works. What does not. When to ease off and when I can push a little. That understanding brought a real sense of calm.

Today I feel fitter than I have in years. I can do physical work, draw energy from it and genuinely feel healthy again. Not because everything is perfect, but because I know what my body needs and I act on it.

Looking back, more than anything I am grateful I took that step. It gave me back my energy, and just as much, my trust in my own body.
